New Year’s Eve Birthday Party Planning

For those born around New Year’s Eve, the holiday can often put quite a damper on the birthday festivities. However, with the right planning, the festivities can be incorporated into the holiday season seamlessly. The date, food offerings, decorations, and the music can all help create an ambiance befitting a birthday.
Choosing the Date
If the honoree was born on the last day of the year, many people may not be able to come to the party if it’s thrown on that day. Ringing in the new year is often planned months in advance and can even be part of a long-standing tradition. To ensure that the birthday party guests will be able to attend, choose a day either before or after the holiday. Choosing a weekend day will also make it more likely that the guests will be able to attend.
The Food Offerings
After a solid two months of pumpkin pies, turkeys, and fall-themed harvest dishes, the birthday party theme should revolve more around the honoree’s favorite foods. Why not fire up the barbecue and make hamburgers or hot dogs? Other non-seasonal offers could include submarine sandwiches, Chinese food, or even a potluck dinner. Don’t let the normal constraints of the season dictate the menu! On the same vein, the birthday cake should not include holiday themes either. Resist the urge to buy a pumpkin or apple-spice cake, as many bakeries are trying to unload these flavors around the new year and will sell them at an inexpensive price.
Birthday Decorations
While it may not seem to matter, those with birthdays around New Year’s Eve are all too used to seeing sagging Christmas trees, garland, and spent Santa candles at their birthday parties. If possible, clear the party venue of all holiday trappings and redecorate using upbeat birthday balloons, streamers, and table decor. Make the atmosphere one of celebration and do away with all mention of the preceding holidays.
The Musical Selections
Put away all of the recordings of Auld Lang Syne and bring out non-seasonal music everyone can enjoy. Find out what the honoree likes and make up a playlist of fun, up-beat favorites. Make sure to program in a few lulls so that the list doesn’t sound frenetic or hurried. A musical accompaniment to Happy Birthday is also a nice touch.
A New Year’s birthday party theme should cast aside all references to the ending holiday season. By choosing the right date, food, and music and redecorating for the party, the honoree will feel as if their party was planned with them in mind!
