Fall birthday parties presents an opportunity to make interesting party food. Halloween and Thanksgiving is prevalent during the fall so play this into the party. Have kids dress up in costume or make them come as a Pilgrim or Indian. Decorate with pumpkins, Indian corn and gourds and play games like pin the face on the pumpkin or pin the tail on the turkey.
Appetizers
Toasted pumpkin seeds, popcorn and candy corn make for easy appetizers. Place in bowls around the party area and let the kids take a handful whenever they wish. Mix it all together in one bowl for a more interesting treat. Provide a plate of sliced apples that have been peeled and soaked in lemon juice so they do not become brown. Place a big bowl of smooth peanut butter next to it and then another small bowl of sunflower seeds. Instruct the revelers to dip the apple slice in peanut butter then into the sunflower seeds if they like. This makes for a delicious and healthy appetizer for kids. Make sure no one has peanut allergies before serving.
Main Attractions
Serve chili in an unusual way. Hollow out small pumpkins and either place a bowl of chili inside or just pour the chili in the pumpkin and serve.
Chili has a strong flavor and may not be suitable for small children. In that case, provide hot dogs and allow those that like chili to garnish their dog with it. Make deviled eggs, but tint the yolk mixture with red food coloring. Fill the egg and place an olive slice in the middle. If the red runs into the egg white, it will just look like a more authentic red eyeball. Check to see if any kids are allergic to red food dye prior to serving. For Thanksgiving theme birthday food make turkey sandwiches or turkey wraps with cranberry sauce as a condiment.
Breakfast Party Food
Instead of lunch, have breakfast and make pumpkin pancakes or waffles. Serve them with maple syrup or honey. Apple and pumpkin flavored doughnuts are easy to find during the fall.
Drinks
Apple cider or Apple juice is always a favorite party drink. Make a fall flavored punch by mixing apple juice, cranberry juice and ginger ale. Put a little dry ice in the punch. Not only will it smoke, but it will also provide more carbonation and give the punch more punch.
Dessert
No birthday party would be complete without a cake. Decorate it in fall colors like orange, yellow, brown, and deep garnet reds. Pumpkin cake might be a good choice keep it simple with chocolate or yellow cake. Make cut out cookies in the shapes of fall leaves or pumpkins, then make frosting in different colors and let the kids enjoy decorating them with the frosting and sprinkles.
