While the food, drinks, and decorations are all important, no celebration is complete without birthday party games! Games will not only teach children to cooperate and compete fairly, they can help run off some of the energy from socializing and eating sugar-laden treats. Here are some of the most simple and fun games for children of all ages.
Water Balloon Toss
Divide the children into pairs and give each pair a water balloon. The object of the game is to throw the balloon back and forth between partners until only one pair with an unbroken balloon remains. If space is unlimited, have the children back away from each other with each toss. Should space be limited, introduce more difficult stipulations for each toss such as one-handed throwing and catching, throwing over the shoulder, or other variations.
The Animal Game
Arrange the children in a circle with one blindfolded in the center. The child in the center then spins three times and selects one of the children from the circle and names an animal. The selected child must then make the sound that the animal makes. They can disguise their voice for more fun. The blindfolded child then tries to guess which child they selected. If they are correct, the children switch places. If they are incorrect, they can try again.
Who Am I?
Have one child leave the room. While they are gone, encourage the children to decide who or what that child will be. Options such as a tiger, a ballerina, or an astronaut will get the group started. When the child returns to the room, they can ask each participant a question to find out their identity. If they have not guessed by the time all children have been asked, they must leave the room to play again. If the child does guess correctly, he or she chooses the next child to leave the room.
Never-Ending Hopscotch
All you will need for this game is chalk and a sidewalk or parking lot at a park. Draw three standard hopscotch grids, end to end. Line the children up and have them hop it. Each child to hop successfully can draw another jump on the end. Encourage marked variations such as left or right foot only or hand-touches to the ground. To keep more children playing longer, children who have failed once can always try again. The game can be played for quite a long time, so make sure there is sufficient space.
All of these games are low-cost and quite entertaining. They can be played for as long as the children have patience for them, and winners could be awarded prizes!
