Birthday Balloon Fun

Birthday balloons are a staple of celebrations, but simply tying them in bunches to be popped or tripped over can create a mess and a choking hazard for small kids. Luckily, there are plenty of cute ideas that will keep them off the floor and out of the mouths of babes.
Make Them Float!
Gone are the days when ordering helium-filled birthday balloons involved a dangerous drive from the local party store in a vehicle crammed with unrestrained orbs floating about. Now, helium can be purchased in small tanks for home use. Birthday parties can have arched flotillas outdoors, or decorate the ceilings indoors with columns of contrasting colors.
While filling the balloons with helium will avoid most hazards, it’s important to keep in mind that allowing children (or adults) to inhale the gas is not always safe. Inhaling helium has been linked to dizzy spells, passing out, and migraine headaches. Make sure no one inhales the gas! The funny voices are just not worth the potential repercussions.
Form Sculptures
Pick up a roll of double-sided tape and use it to make creative, free-form sculptures. Birthday balloons come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colors, so make the most of the options available to construct snowmen, a playhouse, or to spell out the honoree’s name on a blank wall. By keeping the balloons centralized, there will be less of a mess to clean up and far less chances for choking or tripping over them.
A Message to the World Release
Birthdays are often a time of reflection and introspection, even for children. As one year is now over, invite the honoree and guests to write a message on a helium balloon. It could be a secret, a message to God/religious deity, or a message to a departed loved one. Then, set the messages free to the world!
Balloons don’t have to lie limp and languid on the floor at the party. Use helium or double-sided tape to perk them up, and incorporate them into the activities of the celebration. By playing with balloons safely, everyone at the party can enjoy and admire them.
